Downtown Phoenix has a new transportation option - a “fully autonomous ride-hailing service,” Waymo officials said in a release.
The paid, 24-hour service is available to anyone who downloads the service’s app and hails a ride within the downtown area, company officials said.
"Our fifth-generation Jaguar I-PACE vehicles offer a trusted space where people feel confident hailing a ride in downtown Phoenix – 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Chris Ludwick, Waymo product management director, said.
According to the release, the expansion follows two years of operating in the East Valley and is the first public use of the fifth-generation Waymo Driver equipped with Jaguar I-PACEs.
Months of testing have shown the technology on the vehicle “is more than capable of navigating downtown’s complexity,” officials said.
