Water Crisis

Water may wreck West Valley development

New report finds Buckeye’s groundwater may be at higher risk then thought

BUCKEYE — The city of Buckeye, one of the fastest growing communities in the U.S., may have to hit the brakes on development as a new report states it may not have groundwater to allow expansion.

A report released Monday by the Arizona Department of Water Resources — after being mentioned in new Gov. Katie Hobbs’ first State of the State address — showed a 100-year projection looking at the lower Hassayampa sub-basin, from which the city gets all its water..

The report found three concerning projections. The sub-basin is short of 4.4 million acre-feet to meet projected pumping demand, several areas where groundwater will hit bedrock and water level declines ranging from 0 to 983 feet.
