OPINION — On June 30, the federal government agreed, in a filing in U.S. District Court, to stop moving forward on the proposed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Surprise.
U.S. Department of Homeland Security will not detain anyone at the site and will not begin construction to convert it into a detention center, not until it completes the environmental review it tried to skip.
This didn't happen because DHS had a change of heart. DHS didn't want this. They did it because Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes sued them.
