Volunteers headed to ballparks

Sun Citians give time to baseball

With the Cactus League calling “Play Ball” for spring training, fans will flock to the ballparks — although in smaller flocks.

No matter the crowd size, the Peoria Diamond Club and Sundancers in Surprise need volunteers to help during games. Some volunteers traditionally come from the retirement communities of Sun City and Sun City West.

In a typical year, the Sun Cities make up a little more than 25% of the volunteer base for the Sundancers, the support organization for Surprise spring training, according to Diane Arthur, Surprise deputy city manager for communications and marketing. Surprise Stadium, 15930 N. Bullard Ave., is the spring training home of the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals.
