Virus strikes Peoria Unified’s student roster: Enrollment declined 6% during pandemic

At the beginning of the pandemic as virtual instruction was in full force in Peoria Unified School District, one of Jan Ogino’s second-grade students at Heritage Elementary School started showing up to class online in a different environment than she was familiar with.

“It looked like another state, like California,” Ms. Ogino said.

Then after summer break when PUSD went back to in-person instruction in September, the child never showed up and Ms. Ogino couldn’t get a hold of the parent.
