Residents win Scottsdale appeal to extend wall at historic district home

Interim guidelines point to inconsistencies in Villa Monterey area

While typically deciding questions such as the fate of a multi-million-dollar development or discussing community-based initiatives, the Scottsdale City Council last week took up an appeal case for a patio wall extension.

The approval gives Scottsdale residents Lori and Richard Huckle authority to modify the location of an existing wall along East Pasadena Avenue, to increase the size of the enclosed yard, at their townhouse in the historic neighborhood of Villa Monterey Units 1-7.

The Huckles’ request to city council was to appeal a 4-2 denial made by the Historic Preservation Commission in August, when the HPC ruled the patio wall could not be modified.
