Research near Scottsdale preserve shows ‘recent’ earthquake activity

Current study along Carefree Fault part of larger look at safety of regional dams along Salt River

A study in a remote area near the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale shows early indicators of recent earthquake activity.

In April 2023 the Bureau of Reclamation approved a Salt River dams seismic hazard study to determine whether faults in the region are active and to establish the frequency and magnitude of earthquakes on known faults, according to the US Forest Service.

The study’s focus is to investigate active and potentially active faults to gauge the structural safety of regional dams along the Salt River, including Horse Mesa and Mormon Flat dams.
