Veterans struggle with mental health in a post-pandemic world

Isolation, substance abuse are two big challenges

Charles Ashby is a former drug addict and was no stranger to spending the night on the streets at his lowest point.

A veteran, Mr. Ashby is now committed to assisting other homeless veterans as the Veterans Outreach Coordinator for MANA House, a veteran-focused program run by Catholic Charities in Phoenix.

While he is now clean and sober, Mr. Ashby said even he struggled and sought mental health counseling during the isolating days of lockdown. He also had a harder time accessing health services through government resources like the local Veterans Affairs hospital when most in-person interactions were impossible and most services shifted online.
