A 15-year-old is dead after being hit by a vehicle Friday in the 11900 block of North 19th Avenue in Phoenix, police said.
Phoenix police detectives are investigating the hit-and-run that occurred about 5 p.m. Nov. 14 near 19th Avenue and Cactus Road.
Officers arrived and found Jaime Pacheco Ramirez with serious injuries. He was taken to a hospital but did not survive, police said.
The unidentified driver of the vehicle involved remained at the scene “for a short period of time but ran from the area when officers arrived on scene. Officers gave chase and apprehended the man a short distance from the scene,” according to a Phoenix Police Department release.
He was taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries related to the collision and has been processed for being impaired at the time of the collision, police said.
“Charges related to this aspect of the investigation will be decided upon once toxicology results are complete,” police stated in the release, which added:
“The preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle involved was northbound on 19th Avenue at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control and exited the roadway driving through a landscaped area east of 19th Avenue. The vehicle then struck Pacheco Ramirez who was standing on a walkway on the eastside of 19th Avenue.”
The driver’s name and further details will be released later, police said.
