PHOENIX - A program doesn't get to its fifth 6A state final in six years without being able to adapt on the fly.
So it was no surprise that after Gilbert Perry star junior forward Khamil Pierre scored 11 of the Pumas' first 16 points, Valley Vista coach Rachel Matakas switched her defensive strategy and her team limited Pierre to 13 points in the final two-and-a-half quarters.
And it's no surprise that with star senior wing Jennah Isai's shot not falling she focused on distributing the ball and rebounding, nearly finishing her career with a triple double.
