Valley police emphasize training to address school threats

Departments urge that public trust response

After a school lockdown last week in El Mirage in which parents clashed with police, Valley police departments are emphasizing they are constantly training for these scenarios and hope the public can trust them to address those situations.

“Responding to any threat or potential threat at a school in general, it’s paramount to what we do,” said Surprise Police Sgt. Tommy Hale. “Not only is it in the front of mind… but it’s something that we continue to train on and to get better at what we do so we can perfect our response.”

Paradise Valley Officer Jimmy Phan also stressed if a suspect is actively engaged in action that could result in serious bodily harm to students or staff in the school or other life-threatening activity, officers will intervene immediately.
