Valley officials search for more light rail security

Enforcement efforts are up, but security firm remains understaffed

Far more people are getting cited for riding light rail without a ticket or for other violations since Valley Metro and local police ramped up enforcement efforts.

At the same time, the security company responsible for aiding local police remains understaffed, and several Phoenix City Council members say more must be done to ensure people aren’t skirting the rules.

Members of the Phoenix Public Safety and Justice Subcommittee said they believed the 12.3% of riders in the light rail system who did not pay for a ticket are ruining the experience for paying customers.
