Valley not meeting homelessness goals

Despite ‘Zone’ success, Valley groups failing to get people from streets to shelter to permanent housing

The city of Phoenix had stellar results in getting homeless individuals camping in the area known as “The Zone” to accept shelter services. However, numbers from the prior year show overall the city has fallen short of most of its goals for getting homeless people to accept shelter and transitioning them from shelter to permanent housing.

City council members were grateful for Office of Homeless Solutions presentation of homelessness data last week, saying the city strives to make data-driven decisions.

“We are putting more resources behind shelters than ever before by a wide margin. But even then, there is not enough to shelter everyone,” said Mayor Kate Gallego. “So with limited resources, it’s especially important that we are making the best decisions possible, and here that means making data-driven decisions as much as we can.”
