Valley Metro sees markedly improved safety statistics after more than doubling security

After more than doubling its security team from 2023 to 2024 and adding a greater police presence, Valley Metro light rail has seen a dramatic decrease in security incidents aboard trains in recent months.

“Riders continue to see more field security officers and have acknowledged that they appreciate their presence,” said Valley Metro Communications Manager Susan Tierney in an email.

In 2023, Valley Metro and city of Phoenix transit staff presented data to the Phoenix Public Safety and Justice Subcommittee that a light rail passenger is assaulted every other day, on average. There are about 30,000 light rail passengers each day.
