Eight years ago, when Marion Hill, a program coordinator for the city of Phoenix’s Head Start Birth to Five program, went to the classrooms at the Greater Phoenix Urban League, something stuck out to him.
“I didn’t see any fathers,” Hill said. “No fathers were showing up. No fathers dropping off, no fathers picking up. Parent meetings – fathers weren’t showing up. And I was like, ‘Where are all the dads?’ We’ve got 3,500 families in our program, you can’t tell me that there’s just 3,500 moms and that’s it. Where are the dads?”
The Urban League is the largest education service provider for the Head Start Birth to Five program. Hill took it on himself to start a program there to get dads involved.
