It’s no secret schools were some of the U.S. institutions hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic, from a quick pivot to virtual learning to a myriad of financial losses.
But a new report reveals student enrollment and retention at colleges also saw steep declines because of the global health crisis, which could have an impact on local economies as the world takes its first steps toward normalcy.
College Board, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to higher education, released its 2020 enrollment report this month using a sample of nearly 10 million students who represent about 80% of all U.S. high school graduates in the past three years. The report showed enrollment at two-year colleges declined at a much higher rate than four-year colleges.
