Valley cities quiet on potential changes to fluoride in water

Trump, RFK challenges could impact 58% of Arizonans

Valley cities remain mum on what their reaction would be if the Trump administration were to recommend fluoride no longer be added to drinking water.

Some U.S. cities have halted the longstanding practice of adding fluoride to drinking water after a federal government report in August determined “with moderate confidence” that fluoride levels in water at more than twice the recommended limit are linked to lower IQs in children. The study emphasized it is not known if recommended levels of fluoride have any such effect.

Fluoride, also in most toothpastes, strengthens teeth and reduces cavities by replacing minerals lost during normal wear and tear, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Its addition to drinking water has long been considered one of the greatest public health achievements of the 20th century.
