The first night Hans Olson and Chuck Hall met in Phoenix in 1984 they played the blues together.
They may not remember exactly where it was — “some bar on Cave Creek Road,” Hall said Friday — but the Texas-born blues shredder Hall had only been in town a couple weeks when a mutual friend recommended he come see Olson, who was already a legend on the Valley music scene.
“The minute I heard him play, I go, wow, this guy’s heard Lightnin’ Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, all the people I grew up on and loved,” Hall said. “And he just had his own thing, I mean, just strong.”
