VAI plans to buy Glendale land for parking garage

Injunction halts city plans for its Black Lot structure, changes plans

The city of Glendale recently reversed field on plans to build a multistory parking garage near State Farm Stadium.

A lawsuit filed in November by the Arizona Cardinals and the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority led to an injunction against the city building a $73 million parking garage on the Black Lot, south of Cardinals Way and the main parking lots surrounding the stadium. So Glendale is turning to the destination resort west of the lot.

During its June 26 meeting, the Glendale City Council authorized City Manager Kevin Phelps to negotiate an agreement to sell 8.25 acres of city-owned land in a different area of the Black Lot to VAI Resort LLC for $7.55 million.
