Utility bills would increase under ordinances before Mesa City Council Dec. 1

Electric utility charges could be going up Jan. 1 for residents of Districts 1 and 4 in Mesa, while various increases citywide are planned for natural gas, water, wastewater and solid waste utility services. The Mesa City Council will hold a public hearing Dec. 1 on ordinances with the changes.

The council recently was briefed on utility rate recommendations for the departments of water resources, environmental management, and sustainability and energy resources. Some council members expressed concerns over having fee increases during the COVID-19 pandemic and an economic downturn.

The residential service charge would increase $1, from $12 to $13, for the electric utility. The city provides electric utility service to approximately 16,700 residential and commercial customers within approximately 5.5 square miles in the downtown area.
