Maricopa County looks at cameras as a way to cut crime

System under use in Youngtown could expand to Sun Cities

Drivers in Youngtown are on camera in a different approach to gathering information to fight crime.

Town officials approved in February purchasing a license plate reader camera system from Atlanta-based Flock Safety. The cameras are designed to read license plates and can be used by law enforcement to help solve crime in the community. If the system works well in Youngtown, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office officials could expand the program to the Sun Cities, according to Deputy Zane Hagen, MCSO District 3 community outreach officer.

“We thought about it for Sun City West and Sun City to bring up and see what your thoughts are to see if there is interest or not,” he told members of the Property Owners and Residents Association Roads Traffic and Safety Committee.
