Uptick in campus crime reported in 2020 at Mesa Community College

There were 14 crimes reported in 2020 — up from nine in 2019 and six in 2018 — at two Mesa Community College campuses and a downtown center in the Maricopa County Community College District, according to a federally mandated campus-security report released in October.

“The increase in crime was most likely that theft — joy rides — of golf carts that were on our Dobson campus. I believe we had several during this time and a push was done with our various departments that use carts to secure them. This was a crime of opportunity,” MCC Police Cmdr. Steve Lieber said.

When queried on why there were seven crimes listed for 2018 in last year’s report for the years 2017-19, he said the error is to be investigated.
