Phoenix man sentenced for possessing firearm while in U.S. illegally

A 30-year-old Phoenix man has been sentenced to 22 months in prison after pleading guilty to firearm possession.

Senior U.S. District Judge Douglas L. Rayes sentenced Syed Haider Najib who had pleaded guilty “to possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, an alien illegally and unlawfully in the United States,” according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Arizona district. 

Najib, who is from Afghanistan, has been illegally and unlawfully present in the United States since at least March 8, 2018, when his asylum application to remain in the United States permanently was denied and a final order of removal was issued by an immigration judge, the release stated.
