Arizona baker challenges fine art boundaries

When artist and baker Fanny Hicks transported a 40-pound sculpted cow made entirely of solid butter across Arizona in the trunk of her car last November, she worried about the desert heat melting her work and was navigating the boundary between fine art and domestic craft.

Hicks shared the story of her butter cow during the Goodyear Arts & Culture Commission’s "After Hours Art Talk." Her lecture, titled "Butter, But Make It Art," drew local community members for a 90-minute discussion that used edible mediums to challenge traditional definitions of what qualifies as high art.

"Mostly, I'm here to talk to you about creative identities, where we draw the line between art and craft and how sometimes we need to give ourselves permission to claim artistic identities," Hicks said.
