GOP pushes tax cuts in Arizona to mirror federal changes, but potential veto awaits

PHOENIX — Republican lawmakers late Wednesday advanced their plans to cut state taxes by $440 million despite Gov. Katie Hobbs calling it “reckless” with an inherent promise to veto it if it reaches her desk in that form.

The parallel votes by the Senate Finance Committee and the House Ways and Means Committee came over objections from Democrats who said some elements are designed to benefit corporations and the rich. Instead, they generally have lined up behind a plan offered by the governor for more limited tax cuts, one with a $250 million price tag.

And Sen. Mitzi Epstein questioned the rush. The Tempe Democrat chided the GOP majority for pushing ahead with tax cuts even before lawmakers have figured out how much money the state needs to operate in the next fiscal year.
