When Phoenix the quarter horse first came to Hunkapi 11 months ago, he had to learn how to be loved.
When a rider got on him it became immediately clear he has had substantial training, but if someone touched him, he would tense up.
“When he got here, he was very reserved,” Terra Schaad said. “I wouldn’t say he was afraid, but he was very braced against touch. You can tell he was trained under a very firm hand, a very boundaried, very firm hand. He didn’t want to take treats. He was respectful but he was afraid to receive affection and love.”
