Another East Valley district looks at closing a school

The proposal to close Pioneer Elementary School is driven by long-term enrollment trends and the need to keep campuses academically and fiscally sustainable, Gilbert Public Schools leaders told the governing board Dec. 9.

District officials outlined the latest details on the possible closure of Pioneer and the redrawing of several school boundaries for 2026–27. The presentation included updated enrollment data, community feedback and next steps.

Pioneer, which has seen enrollment fall by more than 100 students during three years, is now the district’s smallest elementary school with two classrooms per grade level.
