In celebration of National Grandparents Day, UnitedHealthcare will host its fourth annual Grandparents Day event to honor grandparents and the significant role they play in the lives and health of families.

The event goes from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9 at Wesley Community Health Center at Golden Gate Campus, 1625 N. 39th Ave., Phoenix.

Local community organizations will be in attendance providing basic wellness checks and free haircuts for kids, as well as social services information. Families can enjoy face painting, live Mariachi music and Folklórico dances, a DJ, photo booth, and raffle giveaways.

Families will leave with fresh produce and grandparents will receive “senior food boxes” containing healthy foods for home.

UnitedHealthcare representatives will also be available to answer questions about health benefits.

Grandparents often play a major role in children’s growth and development. According to the most recent U.S. Census reports, there are more than 7 million grandparents in the United States living with grandchildren under the age of 18. Grandparent caregivers are often longer-term primary caregivers, with 32% responsible for their grandchildren.

“Grandparents are major contributors to the health and well-being of families, often raising the grandchildren in their household and providing a sense of safety and security,” Jean Kalbacher, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Arizona CEO, shared in a press release. “We want to honor all the grandparents of our community, and say thank you for all the support they give by hosting this free event for them to enjoy alongside their grandchildren.”
