United for Mesa spent more than $20K to gather signatures

Sought vote to overturn Mesa non-discrimination ordinance

An individual with an Apache Junction address was paid more than $20,000 to circulate petitions and gather signatures for a United for Mesa political action committee referendum.

United for Mesa on April 1 filed petitions with more than 11,000 signatures to refer a Mesa City Council-approved nondiscrimination ordinance to the ballot. The committee on May 7 withdrew its referendum signatures.

Diane Burns, whose address is in Apache Junction ZIP code 85210 but outside city limits in unincorporated Pinal County, was paid $20,094 under “miscellaneous/petitions,” according to the committee’s campaign finance report for Jan. 1-March 31, the first quarter of 2021, filed with the city of Mesa.
