‘United for Mesa’ files petitions for vote to overturn nondiscrimination ordinance

United for Mesa, a political action committee, on Thursday filed petitions with more than 11,000 signatures to refer a Mesa City Council approved nondiscrimination ordinance to the ballot.

The ordinance, approved March 2 in a 5-2 vote of the City Council, prohibits discrimination in employment, housing and places of public accommodation based on race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, veteran’s status, marital status, genetic information or familial status.

United for Mesa on March 4 filed a petition for referendum with the city clerk. The deadline to file signed petitions was 5 p.m. April 1, Kevin Christopher, Mesa senior public information and communications specialist, said Thursday.
