Two CUSD students named Flinn Scholars

Posted

Cameron Bautista, of Basha High School, and Carol Chen, of Hamilton High, are the 2023 Flinn Scholars representing the Chandler Unified School District.

They are two of the 20 Arizona high school seniors awarded the 2023 Flinn Scholarship. It’s a merit-based award that will provide each of them a full ride to one of Arizona’s public universities.

Cameron will be attending Arizona State University, studying political science and mathematics. Chen will be attending the University of Arizona.

Twelve CUSD students were named Flinn semifinalists earlier this year.

Now in its 38th year, the scholarship is supported by the Phoenix-based Flinn Foundation in partnership with the three state universities.

The Flinn Scholars represent public district and charter high schools. The comprehensive Flinn Scholarship package, which is valued at more than $130,000, includes the cost of tuition, fees, housing, meals and at least two study-abroad experiences.

More than 1,000 applications were received by the program in October for the 20 awards, creating an award rate of 1.9%.

To qualify, Flinn Scholars must excel in the classroom and typically rank in the top 5% of their graduating class, while also demonstrating leadership in a variety of extracurricular activities both at school and in their communities.
