Police arrested two men in connection with two fatal shootings in Tempe earlier this month.
Quinshawn Hopkins, 20, and Zareek Batchelor, 19, face charges including armed robbery and drug possession. A judge only found probable cause for Mr. Hopkins’ charges of first-degree murder.
The shootings occurred Oct. 2, the first one in the Arizona Mills parking lot near a fast food restaurant.
Tempe police learned Mr. Hopkins, Mr. Batchelor and two other people gathered to meet with another group of other people for a marijuana sale. However, police learned Mr. Hopkins’s group allegedly planned to rob the other group of the drugs.
When Mr. Hopkin’s group arrived at the meeting spot, he allegedly shot into the other group’s vehicle, killing a 24-year-old man.
While police investigated the homicide at Arizona Mills, officers also responded to a shooting at an apartment complex near Broadway Road and Priest Drive. Police learned two groups had met for a marijuana sale.
While inside the vehicle of another group, Mr. Hopkins allegedly shot a male passenger and the driver. The passenger died from his injuries. Evidence led police to identify Mr. Hopkins and Mr. Batchelor as suspects. The two other people with them were identified but have not been arrested.
Police learned Mr. Hopkins and Mr. Batchelor had fled to California after the shooting, but they later returned. Police then arrested them Thursday at the apartment complex where the second shooting occurred.
Mr. Hopkins and Mr. Batchelor were jailed in lieu of $1 million and $500,000 bonds, respectively.
