Trump's jingoism: Is this what we are as a country, or want to be?

A background issue for the 2026 midterms

OPINION — On many fronts, the actions of the Trump administration are raising the questions: What kind of a country are we? And what kind of a country do we want to be?

I doubt that such ontological questions will be a leading and explicit feature of the upcoming midterm elections. But I believe that they will be a background influence of at least some significance.

Nowhere are the questions posed more clearly than in Donald Trump’s increasingly jingoist approach to the Western hemisphere.
