OPINION — A lot of Trump supporters seem genuinely confused about why friends, siblings, coworkers, and long- term acquaintances are distancing themselves. If we were arguing about tax rates, energy policies or immigration, then ending relationships would seem excessive.
But that's not it anymore. Trump became a character test. It's the part that Trump voters don't seem to understand.
When people watch you support someone who mocks, threatens revenge, excuses corruption, attacks democratic institutions, dehumanizes immigrants, praises dictators and treats decency like a weakness, they are not simply hearing your “policy preference.” They are hearing what you are able to tolerate, and in some cases what you are willing to celebrate.
