While the issue of big rigs parked, often overnight, in vacant fields, rights of way and in neighborhoods has become an acute issue in Surprise and other Valley hot spots.
As a Maricopa Association of Governments study from late 2019 through early 2021 showed, metro Phoenix lacks enough designated parking for semi trucks, both in terms of rest areas and truck stops. Of the 309 survey participants, 95% have more than seven years of experience driving commercial trucks and 83% have a national range of operations.
There is a corollary to the number of trucks parked outside of designated spots: 90% of survey participants rated the availability of truck parking in the Valley as “poor” or “very poor,” and 80% of the respondents typically spend more than 30 minutes looking for a parking spot.
