Trooper uses SUV to stop wrong-way driver on Loop 101 in Tempe

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating a Sunday morning collision on Loop 101 in Tempe where a DPS trooper used his unmarked vehicle to collide with a wrong-way driver, bringing the suspect’s car to a stop.

The trooper and wrong-way driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospitals, authorities stated in a release.

DPS troopers were notified about the wrong-way vehicle at 4:35 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 21.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating a Sunday morning collision on Loop 101 in Tempe where a DPS trooper used his unmarked vehicle to collide with a wrong-way driver, bringing the suspect’s car to a stop.

The trooper and wrong-way driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospitals, authorities stated in a release.

DPS troopers were notified about the wrong-way vehicle at 4:35 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 21.

A state trooper spotted a red Cadillac sedan traveling southbound on northbound State Route 101 between Guadalupe and Baseline roads.

“The trooper intercepted and made the courageous decision to collide with the vehicle, successfully bringing it to a stop,” the release stated.

The wrong-way driver is a 22-year-old man and is suspected of being impaired, according to DPS.
