Treva Slote, 75Treva Slote, 75, of North Phoenix passed away March 21 of cancer.Ms. Slote was a friend, mentor and member of the Board of Directors at Animals Benefit Club of Arizona in Northeast Phoenix for more than 20 years.Millions of animals and thousands of people were helped by Ms. Slote, who worked tirelessly for 50 years.She conducted cruelty investigations and prosecuted hundreds of animal abusers.She provided emergency animal care for injured strays and veterinary care for those on a fixed income.She was involved in every legislative effort to improve the plight of companion animals, farm animals and wildlife in Arizona.Ms. Slote received an incredible number of local and national awards, the most notable was the coveted "National Humanitarian Award" from the American Veterinary Medical Association, the only non-celebrity person in the field of animal welfare to receive such a high honor, joining the ranks of other recipients as actress Betty White and writer Roger Caras.On Dec. 21, 1997 Ms. Slote responded to a police call for help at 1 a.m.She hopped in her station wagon with a stretcher, as she always did, and went to rescue a Dalmatian who was hit by a car in South Phoenix.While placing the dog in her station wagon, a drunk driver critically wounded her and a police officer. Ms. Slote lost her left leg in the incident.The outpouring of blood donors in the Phoenix area was so great that there was a seven-week waiting period at all Arizona Blood Banks, breaking all blood donation records for Arizona.At Ms. Slote"s request, ABC will continue her work through Animal Emergency Services, which allows anyone to rescue an injured animal after hours and take it to the nearest emergency clinic for help at no cost to the transporter, and Veterinary Aid for Companion Animals, which offers help with an owned pet for people on a limited income, especially the elderly and retired.A "Celebration of Treva"s Life" will be held 10 a.m.-5 p.m. April 29 at the Treva Slote Activity Center at Animals Benefit Club of Arizona, 3111 E. Saint John Road.Ms. Slote"s friends and family will share details of her life. Her awards, mementos and news stories will be on display.Call 602-971-0839.
