Two people died Saturday after the driver of a car failed to pull over for a traffic stop in Phoenix before crashing into a store in Avondale, police said.

Sergio Lara-Garcia, 18, and Julian Lugo-Estrada, 16, died at a hospital following the crash that occurred about 1:40 a.m. June 28 at Dysart and Buckeye roads, according to a Phoenix Police Department release.

Officers attempted to stop the car seen driving recklessly near 99th Avenue and Buckeye Road, but police said Lara-Garcia refused to stop and fled from officers. The Phoenix Police Department helicopter followed the car into Avondale.

“As the car was driving south on Dysart Road from the I-10 Freeway, it approached Buckeye Road at a high rate of speed,” the release stated. “The vehicle lost control as it passed over the railroad tracks and crashed into a local business.”

The vehicle burst into flames.

Phoenix vehicle crimes detectives took over the investigation.
