A traffic collision on Cactus Road at 83rd Avenue resulted in a fatality, March 7, police said.

At about 2:30 a.m., Peoria police responded to an injury accident at the intersection of 83rd Avenue and Cactus Road. The accident involved a gray 4-door sedan and a blue sport utility vehicle.

Police said preliminary investigation shows  the blue SUV was traveling westbound on Cactus Road approaching 83rd Avenue with a green light. The gray sedan was traveling southbound on 83rd Avenue approaching Cactus Road and failed to stop at the red traffic light, striking the passenger side of the blue SUV.

The passenger of the blue SUV sustained significant injuries and was taken  to a local hospital, where he later died.

The passenger has been identified as 29-year-old Robert Garcia of Phoenix. The driver of the blue SUV was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the gray sedan sustained serious injuries and was also taken to a local hospital.

The intersection was closed for several hours during the investigation but was open for normal traffic at about 9:45 a.m.

The Peoria Police Department’s Traffic Services Unit is still investigating this incident. Speed and possible impairment of the driver of the gray sedan may be a factor in this crash. At the time, no arrests have been made and no citations have been issued.
