Traffic collision at Cactus Road in Peoria results in fatality

Posted

Over the weekend, a traffic collision on Cactus Road resulted in a fatality, police said.

Peoria Police and Peoria Fire-Medical responded to an injury accident at the intersection of Cactus Road and 79th Avenue, about 9:45 p.m., Aug. 20.

The accident involved a red SUV and a black SUV.

A preliminary investigation shows the driver of the black SUV drove northbound on 79th Avenue through the intersection at Cactus Road and had a green light. The driver of the red SUV was traveling westbound on Cactus Road and failed to stop for a red light causing the vehicles to collide in the intersection, police said.

The driver of the red SUV was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle, and she sustained significant injuries. Life saving measures were provided on scene and she was taken to a local hospital for treatment. She later died of her injuries at the hospital. The driver has been identified as 45-year-old Cynthia Tapper, of Peoria.

The driver and passenger of the black SUV sustained minor injuries and were not taken to the hospital. The driver of the black SUV remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation. The intersection was closed for several hours during the investigation but was open for normal traffic at about 3 a.m., Aug. 21.

The Peoria Police Department’s Traffic Services Unit is still investigating this incident; at this time it is unknown if impairment was a factor for the driver of the red SUV.

Impairment was not detected in the driver of the black SUV.

Members of the Peoria Police Department thanked those who stopped to render aid.

"We appreciate everyone’s patience while the roadway was closed," said police spokesman Brandon Sheffert.
