Town hall set to discuss new ZIP code

The 85144 ZIP code covers parts of San Tan, Queen Creek

State Rep. Neal Carter will be hosting a town hall to discuss the new 85144 ZIP code covering the Pinal County parts of Queen Creek, as well as San Tan Valley.

The town hall will take place at 6 p.m., Tuesday, June 20 at 2197 W. Gold Dust Ave. in San Tan Heights.

The new 85144 ZIP code encompasses the area south of Empire Boulevard, west of Gary Road and north of Arizona Farms Road. The new ZIP code will take effect on July 1, 2023.

There are currently 280 Queen Creek addresses in the newly formed ZIP code, including the Goldmine Estates subdivision, Earnhardt Queen Creek and U-Haul Moving & Storage, according to Queen Creek officials.

Only residents affected by the new 85144 ZIP code are being notified of the change by mail. All mail will continue to be delivered out of the Queen Creek Post Office at 22424 S. Ellsworth Loop Road.

Carter will discuss how the new ZIP code will benefit Pinal County by moving sales tax revenue to the county, according to a press release from Carter’s office.

In the release, Carter further stated that tax revenue has been “incorrectly remitted to other jurisdictions because of the ZIP code’s presence in both Maricopa and Pinal counties.”

“The new 85144 zip code will be correctly charged a total sales tax rate of 6.7% instead of Queen Creek’s 8.55% rate,” Carter stated, “As your state representative, the only representative from San Tan Valley, it is important to me to make sure that the community is not over-taxed on its purchases, and that the tax it does pay goes back to the community for roads and not to a different county.”

Residents living in the new ZIP code area are encouraged by the Postal Service to begin addressing correspondence using the new number starting June 1. Delivery to the new ZIP code will begin on July 1.

Mail with the old ZIP code will continue to be delivered to homes in the affected area for one year.
