TRIBUTE

Tower Challenge returns to Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale

Thousands of Arizonans will gather at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, for the annual 9/11 Tower Challenge.

The event is a tribute to the first responders who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, and to those who continue to serve today.

Participants will climb 2,071 steps, the same number found in each of the Twin Towers, in remembrance of the 343 firefighters, 71 law enforcement officers and eight paramedics who died in the line of duty at the World Trade Center. Photos of the fallen first responders will line the stairs, giving climbers a chance to pause on the sacrifice each one made in the service of others.

As part of this year’s event, the 100 Club is searching for a local singer to perform the National Anthem before the climb begins. Arizona residents of all ages are invited to enter the contest by submitting a video or link of themselves singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” to marisha@100club.org.

The deadline to enter is Thursday, Aug. 14. The winner will be announced Friday, Aug. 15 and will perform live on the arena floor on Saturday, Sept. 6.

The event benefits the 100 Club of Arizona, a nonprofit that provides financial assistance and resources to first responders and their families in times of tragedy. The organization also provides wellness resources and safety equipment to protect first responders.

Registration is $45 and includes entry to the stair climb. For those unable to complete the stairs or for children under 16, a four-lap “Walk and Roll” around the arena concourse, totaling 2,071 steps, is available for $40.

Free parking will be provided in Lot G. Community members are encouraged to register in advance at 100club.org. For information on 100 Club of Arizona, visit the same site.
