Tortilla Flat owners: transparency needed from ADOT officials on SR88 road project

The owners of Tortilla Flat say there’s no transparency from Arizona Department of Transportation officials over when improvements can get done on a stretch of the historic Apache Trail.

Tortilla Flat owners Katie Ellering and Chris Field said they were told a formal study would be complete by spring = 2023 to determine the best way to fix a washed-out section of road along state Route 88 east of the Fish Creek Overlook in the Superstition Wilderness area.

The owners, residents of Apache Junction, purchased Tortilla Flat around the time a fire and storms contributed to the road closure. The closure has resulted in 10% to 15% of “total business lost” because motorists can’t travel far past Tortilla Flat — which includes Superstition Saloon and Grill, a mercantile and country stores, Field said.
