Phoenix moves to close select trails on hottest Valley days

Pilot program proved successful in preventing rescues

Phoenix will continue to close some of the city’s most popular and most dangerous hiking trails during midday on the hottest days of the year, making permanent the policy from a pilot program tested this summer.

Trails at Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak will close 11 a.m.–5 p.m. during days when the National Weather Service issues an excessive heat watch.

After a pilot program from mid-July through September, the city’s Parks and Recreation Board made the change permanent during its Thursday, Oct. 28, meeting after the pilot program yielded positive results and positive public feedback.
