An 18-month-old boy is in the hospital after he was pulled from a pool at his home in Glendale.
Around 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, Glendale police and fire officials responded to a home near 67th Avenue and Camelback Road for reports of a drowning.
According to the Glendale Fire Department, the boy's sister had pulled him out of the backyard pull. The teenager performed CPR on her brother while waiting for first responders.
When crews arrived, they started life-saving measures on the boy before taking him to the hospital.
Glendale Fire said the boy regained pulses at the hospital and was trying to breath on his own.
On the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 25, hospital staff reports that the boy is continuing to receive treatments and the family is not giving up hope. The boy remains in extremely critical condition.
The Glendale Fire Department wants to remind the public that drownings happen year-round in Arizona.
"It is imperative that we do not get complacent," the department stated in a release. "Children will always find a way to water."
Glendale Fire says the ABCs of water safety are an easy way to remember drowning prevention tips:
"A" is for adult supervision. Nothing is better than an adult's undivided attention. When around water, do not text or scroll on your phone and never leave children unattended.
"B" is for barriers. Pool fences, pool netting, and high latching interior doors are all deterrents, but they do not ensure a child's safety.
"C" is for classes. There are multiple free swim lesson opportunities in the Valley. Children can learn water survival as young as 6 months. It is also important for people to learn CPR in case of an emergency.
