To lick or not to lick: Scottsdale restaurant offers salt bricks for customers to purchase

After viral social media storm, The Mission in Old Town aims to clear its name

After almost 15 years of business and a new location, The Mission in Old Town Scottsdale and its infamous Himalayan salt wall have received a bit of buzz for viral videos and images of patrons taking a taste of more than the restaurant’s tasty dishes.

At The Mission, with locations in both Old Town and in the Kierland Commons, the kitchen is armored with a pink brick wall — built with bricks of Himalayan salt instead of other traditional materials.

Highlighted on outlets like CNN, NPR and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the restaurant has gained attention for supposedly encouraging its guests to lick the wall, with promises of the material possessing anti-microbial properties and a salty treat.
