A paralegal, a businesswoman/writer and a career educator who has served as a teacher principal and district superintendent squared off in a candidate forum hosted by the Scottsdale Parent Council Oct. 7 designed to help voters decide who should fill two seats on the Scottsdale Unified School District opening up next year.
Those three would be Jeanne Beasley, Amy Carney and Dr. Jennifer Johnson respectively and they grappled with questions like how to ensure parents are heard when deciding to close schools, how to manage student-facing positions in light of a shrinking budget and their stance on the district’s $375-million, five year bond to pay for aging infrastructure.
Maybe one of the most important questions of the event was how would each candidate address declining enrollment.
