Thompson: Much bigger issue not addressed

I was excited to read your headline article about signage (“Safety concerns raised over signs,” Sun City West Independent, Nov. 9, 2022) in Sun City West but feel that your article overlooks a much bigger and potentially greater and dangerous situation.

Many streets and intersections do not have any stop signs at all, which is a more relevant problem than the need to replace signs faded by weather, graffitti and storms.

As a resident and bicyclist here at Sun City West, I am very acquainted with the streets, especially where there is a dire need for stop signs to be initially placed where there are none. I invite you to be shown where I have had Maricopa County Department of Transportation install signs on Whitewood Drive at its intersection with Futura and Ballad drives, and on Eveningside Drive after multiple phone calls. It took me two years to get MCDOT to remove redundant, marked second lanes on Granite Valley Drive crossing over R.H. Johnson Boulevard where motorists in two lanes headed north onto 151st Avenue competed for a single lane.

Evidently MCDOT officials do not want to spend additional financial outlay on stop signs for streets that stop at a perpendicular street. There should be a stop sign at each intersection where one road meets another. Agree?

There are many more sites here at Sun City West where there are no signs at all.
