Third suspect in fatal north Phoenix shooting in custody

Posted

Phoenix police have arrested a third man in connection with a fatal shooting, as well as two people who reportedly tried to help a previously arrested suspect flee to Mexico.

Oscar Aguirre, 20, was booked into jail on charges of murder, armed robbery and kidnapping.

Police identified him as the third suspect in a Jan. 8 home invasion and subsequent fatal shooting of Travis Dunham.

On that date, police said Michael Warner was in the residence “visiting” his friend Mr. Dunham when he contacted his accomplices, Matthew Zawacky and Mr. Aguirre to let them know Mr. Dunham was inside.

Mr. Zawacky and Mr. Aguirre then forced their way into the residence and tied up the occupants to rob them. Mr. Warner pretended to be a victim as well (Daily News-Sun, Jan. 16, 2018, page 5).

Mr. Dunham was able to free himself and obtain a gun inside the residence. Gunfire exchanged between the suspects and Mr. Dunham, who was killed.

Police said Mr. Zawacky received a gunshot wound to his shoulder. He and Mr. Aguirre fled the scene.

Police said Mr. Zawacky did not seek medical help locally, but drove with his brother Michael Zawacky and Sal Carrillo to the Mexican border. They arrived at the Andrade Port of Entry but it was closed.

However, federal and local authorities contacted them. The officials had no idea Mr. Zawacky was a suspect in a crime. The authorities had him transported to a Yuma hospital.

Due to the extent of his injury, Mr. Zawacky was flown back to Phoenix to be treated. Phoenix police homicide detectives contacted Mr. Zawacky there and learned he, Mr. Warner and Mr. Aguirre were the home invasion and homicide suspects.

All three have now been arrested and booked into the Maricopa County jail.

In addition, Michael Zawacky (Jan. 14), Sal Carrillo (Jan. 16)  and Emily Canfield (Jan. 14), who also aided assisted Matthew Zawacky, were arrested and booked into jail for hindering prosecution in this case.
