‘They never grow up’: Phoenix foster kids age out

Pandemic brought new barriers to older youth

Tysheria Harrell has been through a lot in her 20 years of life.

She and her siblings were removed from her mom’s custody when she was 15 due to abuse. They were separated in foster care, eradicating the family unit. Harrell lived in a group home and an independent living facility throughout her time in the system.

She said neither prepared her for living on her own for the first time.
